Herb Lubalin, one of the greats.

When I look at some of Herb Lubalin’s work and pull up his fonts on my font list, a certain chord is struck. Herb Lubalin’s work, I would say, is summed up in the name of his most credited typeface, Avant Garde. He was ahead of his time creating trend-setting and iconic images through his typographic creations. The “wiftly” gestures of his alternates, the sex-appeal of placement between type form and image, and the modern taste and wide, yet familiar adaptability of Avant Garde.
Herb Lubalin my hat goes off to you.
“Herbert F. (Herb) Lubalin (1918 – May 24, 1981) was a prominent American graphic designer. He collaborated with Ralph Ginzburg on three of Ginzburg’s magazines: Eros, Fact, and Avant Garde, and was responsible for the creative visual beauty of these publications. He designed a typeface, ITC Avant Garde, for the last of these; this distinctive font could be described as a post-modern interpretation of art deco, and its influence can be seen in logos created in the 1990s and 2000s.”

My Genome, My Self
The Personal Genome Project (P.G.P.) has created a public database that will contain the genomes and traits of 100,000 people. Tapping the magic of crowd sourcing that gave us Wikipedia and Google rankings, the project seeks to engage geneticists in a worldwide effort to sift through the genetic and environmental predictors of medical, physical and behavioral traits.

Pride in the Sky!
Its always a great feeling to see our graphic material in real life!
We recently saw our Pride 2008’s Skytrain graphics, that celebrated their 30th anniversary, as we rode the Vancouver Skytrain line and it was a pleasure to see our work along side one of the trains.
We hope all the “Vancouver-ites “and city visitors who rode the train and saw the graphics felt as happy and bright as the rainbow!
Thank you Vancouver Pride Society for the opportunity for the rainbow of work.
We’ll see you in the new Pride season.

Definium Parties at Koodo's Big Night Out
On Friday August 1, 2008 Definium Design light up the streets with our friends at Vancouver Pride at their annual party, Koodo’s Big Night Out. Four busy city streets on Davie St. were blocked off for the exciting night of partying. Pride organized two beer gardens, two stages, performers, dancers, bands, food vendors, games and porta potties. We partied till midnight and until the wee hours of the morning.
Pride can sure put on a party!

Presented alongside Vancity, Koodo’s Big Night Out will include licensed areas with DJs, multiple stages, artisans, dancing, and a youth area from 7pm-12pm on Friday August 1st. Sections of Davie St. will be temporarily closed between Burrard St. and Bute St. to host the event. While licensed areas will be blocked off, Davie St. will remain open for anyone on foot to enjoy the event and Pride celebrations.
